Horse gram masiyal II


Ingredients
  • Horse gram - 1/2 cup
  • Shallots - 10 - 15 (chopped lengthwise)
  • Garlic - 4 (chopped lengthwise)
  • Green chilly - 4 or adjust according to spice level needed
  • Cumin seeds - 2 tsp
  • Coriander seeds - 1 tsp
  • Hing - a pinch
  • Curry leaves - 1 strings
  • Coriander leaves - 1 handful
  • Salt to taste.
  • Oil as required

Method
  • Clean & wash the horse gram.
  • Add fresh water & boil the horse gram with 1 tsp Cumin seeds & 1/2 tsp Coriander seeds till it is tender.
  • Mash the dal (using a masher or 1 or 2 quick turns in the blender) & keep it aside. 
  • Heat 1 tbsp of oil in the pan on medium heat.
  • Splutter cumin, coriander seeds, hing & garlic. Fry till the garlic turns golden brown in color.
  • Now add curry leaves, green chillies, onions & salt.
  • Fry till the onions becomes transparent. Now add the mashed horse gram & mix well.
  • Finally add chopped coriander leaves & remove from heat.
  • Serve it with hot rice.

Keerai Masiyal


Ingredients
  • Frozen greens - 200 g
  • Shallots - 2/3 cup (chopped)
  • Green chillies - 8 (cut into1/2 inch pieces)
  • Cumin - 1 tsp
  • Garlic - 7 (crushed)
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig
  • Salt - to taste
  • Oil - as required

Group II (Optional)
  • Coconut oil - 1 tbsp
  • Cumin - 1/2 tsp
  • Red chillies - 2 (whole)
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig
  • Garlic - 2-3 (crushed)
  • Shallots - handful (chopped)
  • Salt to taste


Method 
  • Heat oil in the kadai & splutter cumin seeds on high medium flame.
  • Then add curry leaves, green chillies, garlic & onions one by one. Fry well.
  • Now add the greens & fry well. Sprinkle some salt & water. (If you want the greens to be little watery then add 1/2 cup water or else just sprinkle some water & cook. I have added 1/2 a cup of water).
  • Reduce the flame. Cover & cook till the greens becomes soft.
  • Remove from fire & allow it to cool slightly.
  • Now mash it with the masher & keep aside.
  • Add coconut oil in the separate pan & fry the group II ingredients one by one in the same order.
  • Add it to the greens & mix well.
  • Serve it with rice.

Tips for the recipe - I have used frozen greens. If you can use fresh greens then it taste much better. Go for good variety of greens which can be used for masiyal. If you are omitting the group II instructions, then just add a spoon of coconut oil to  the greens (after mashing) & serve hot.

Spicy Potato Masala




Ingredients

  • Potato - 2 medium size (Chopped into medium size cubes)
  • Onion - 1 small size (Chopped)
  • Curry leaves - 1 string
  • Tomato - 1 medium size(chopped)
  • Ginger & garlic paste - 1 tsp
  • Shambhar powder - 1/4 or 1/2 tsp (use according to the spice level)
  • Chilly powder - 1/4 or 1/2 tsp (use according to the spice level)
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Mustard -1/4 tsp
  • Urad Dal - 1/4 tsp
  • Lemon - few drops(optional)
  • Coriander leaves - 2 tbsp(chopped)
  • Oil - 2 tbsp
  • Salt for taste


Method
  • Boil the potatoes with salt & 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder & keep it aside.
  • Heat oil in kadai, on high medium flame.
  • Splutter mustard, urad dal & curry leaves one by one.
  • Add the ginger-garlic paste & fry till the oil separates.
  • Add onions and fry till it becomes light brown in color.
  • Add the chopped tomatoes & continue frying till it becomes mashy.
  • Now add sambhar powder, chilly powder, turmeric powder & salt.
  • Fry for 1 minute.
  • Now add the potato & mix well.
  • Slightly mash the potato using the spatula or the potato masher.
  • Do not mash the potato completely. slightly press it for few times.
  • Add few drops of lemon juice, coriander leaves & mix well.
  • Serve it with roti or rice.

Tips for the recipe - Chilly powder & sambhar powder can be used at the ratio of 1;1 for good taste. Some times the tomatoes may be sour. In such case you can avoid adding the lemon drops.If you feel like having more sour taste, then you can add more lemon juice.

Moong Dal Masiyal







Ingredients

Group - I
  • Whole moong dal - 1/2 cup 
  • Coconut oil - 1 tbsp 
  • Coriander leaves - 2 tbsp (chopped) 
  • Salt to taste 


Group - II
  • Oil - 1-2 tbsp 
  • Cumin - 3/4 tsp 
  • Coriander seeds - 3/4 tsp 
  • Pepper corns- 1/2 tsp 
  • Red chillies - 2 (halved) 
  • Green chillies - 4 
  • Curry leaves - 1 spring 
  • Garlic - 4 (chopped) 
  • Shallot - 1/2 cup (chopped) 


Method
  • Roast the dal & pressure cook with salt. 
  • The dal should look broken & slightly mashy. 
  • Heat oil in the pan. 
  • Fry the group II ingredients one by one in the same order. 
  • When the onions turn brown, add the dal & mix well, till the dal is completely mashy. 
  • Add a spoon of coconut oil & garnish it with chopped coriander leaves. 


Tips for the recipe - This can also be cooked with any heavy bottom pan. This should not be very watery. Dal should be mashy. You can also serve this with a spoon of ghee.

Horse gram Masiyal




Ingredients

  • Horse gram - 1/2 cup
  • Red onions - 1 medium size (chopped)
  • Green chilly - 4 or adjust according to spice level needed
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Coriander seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 2 or 3 strings
  • Coriander leaves - 2 handfuls
  • Salt to taste.

Method


  • Remove stones from horse gram if any.
  • Clean & wash the horse gram.
  • Add fresh water & boil the horse gram with Cumin seeds & Coriander seeds till it is tender.
  • Allow it to cool.
  • Now add onions, curry leaves, green chillies & salt to the horse gram & give one or two turns in the blender. Do not grind it very soft.
  • Finally add chopped coriander leaves & mix well.
  • Serve it with hot rice.

Tips for the recipe - The gram should be mashy.Instead of big onions you can also use shallots. It will increase the taste of the dish.
